Rare Regency Toleware Plate Warming Cabinet
Rare Regency Toleware Plate Warming Cabinet
Exceptionally rare and wonderful Regency plate warming cabinet.
English 1810-20
The term tôle, derived from the French tôle peinte, "painted sheet metal", is synonymous in English usage with japanning on tin.
This extraordinary object is in complete and untouched, lovely condition. It is raised on cabriolet legs with paw feet and serpentine shaped on all 4 sides with a pagoda top. The whole retains all its original decoration, lifting handles and nicely detailed door knob.
The decoration is in overall great order with gilded flowers and butterflies.
Plate warmers were used, as the name suggests, to place items of crockery in by a fire to warm, making Toleware ideal for this purpose, as the metal retains more heat.
This one came from a Lady of title, has known provenance and has been in the same family for several generation.
The plates in the images below are part of an early Flight, Barr & Barr service which is also for sale.
A rare chance to own a really beautiful antique, that of course can be still used today!
