Unique and rare 1930's scratch built child's bicycle
Exceptional, grandfather scratch built kids bicycle.
We know a little bit about its history. Firstly its unique and was one of a pair (the other was a tricycle) built by a doting grandfather for his two grandchildren and it originates from Dorset.
Apparently the grandfather was a railway engineer and that might explain the crank drive system rather than the traditional chain drive.
One thing is for sure, he was an extremely talented engineer!.
So to the bike…solid rubber tyres and riveted aluminium wheels, welded frame, height adjustable handle bars and a solid formed steel seat (this was at one time covered we suspect). The most unusual thing about the bike is its crank drive, so the child has to simply push up and down with their legs to turn the back wheel, simply ingenious! and retaining a lovely green painted finish.
The nicest thing about the bike is that it still works perfectly as our eldest daughter at four years old has ridden it (she prefers her pink one though)
We have made a little wooden stand for the bike to allow it to be displayed and this really should to end up in a museum.
