18th Century Library Steps in the form of Lions

£4,750.00

Exceptionally rare and impressive 18th Century Library steps in the form of a pair of sitting lions.

You know, just occasionally wonderful things come through the door that you have never seen before and never likely to see again, and thats these!

We are in two minds as to whether to sell them or not, they are simply stunning!

So we think they have a strong Italian influence but came to us via a Dutch source and we are dating them at 18th Century, mid / late.

The lions themselves, which we believe to be walnut have some exceptional carved details and have an almost “fantastical beasts” look about them. They have taken on a great patina due to the years and years of use and have have lovely dark treacle / chestnut colour to them. The underside is reinforced with original wrought iron stretchers whilst we think the steps themselves are maybe pine.

The material to the steps we believe to an early tapestry that we think would have been a rich deep red in colour, this colour has long since gone but the material is still there, we are selling them “as is” some may wish to recover the steps, we would not.

The condition is incredible good, yes there are some age related repairs and a little woodworm long since gone. They are structurally sound and ready for use. (or just to look at with a pile of good books on each step)
